@nitrrogen__ @chud14_3 No, cossacks were Rusyns who lived far away from civilization and had to become warriors to survive and make money, and ended up being used by the PLC as a wall against tatars

@nitrrogen__ @Zassthelurker @chud14_3 I don't believe it was really polonized beyond loan words. I know it was called Eastern Polish by linguists at the time who didn't have a name for it, but only registers cossacks were close to poles, and other cossacks hated them because they were jealous of their pay

@nitrrogen__ @Zassthelurker @chud14_3 That was the start of it but they all spoke very close dialects until the mongol conquered what would become Russia and the poles conquered Byelorussia and Ukraine

@Zassthelurker @nitrrogen__ @chud14_3 If one language got influence from Tatar, it would be Ukrainian. iirc there's quite a lot of Turkic words in Ukrainian because of that. The only things Russians took from Tatars was their heads.

@nitrrogen__ @Zassthelurker @chud14_3 When they did, the Kyivan Rus was already a far long gone dream and easy Slavs were separated under many many petty kingdoms.

@nitrrogen__ @Zassthelurker @chud14_3 No, the separation happened when Muscovy got conquered by the mongols while Ukraine was let to the Cumans

@nitrrogen__ @Zassthelurker @chud14_3 Too recent, I think it peaked in the early 1800's because they deported Ukrainians there, then they deported them back later

@nitrrogen__ @Zassthelurker @chud14_3 How do you explain that my language (Balatchka) is almost identical to Ukrainian while (correct me if I'm wrong) poles have never occupied Don or Kuban

@nitrrogen__ @Zassthelurker @chud14_3 Ruthenia/Ruthenians is the English name for Rus/Rusyns (not the modern Rusyns)
Belarus is named like this because it's just a part of Russia that was under Lithuanian domination, if it wasn't then it would be part of Russia proper

@nitrrogen__ @Zassthelurker @chud14_3 It didn't get polonized. Yes Ukraine was part of the PLC but the entire reason why the cossacks weren't crushed is that they were so far away from anyone else that nobody wanted to bother with them, and they served as protection from Tatars. There were entire weeks of travel

@nitrrogen__ @Zassthelurker @chud14_3 No it didn't lmao, Ukrainian speakers were even majority in the Russian far east before they got deported when they tried to declare independence

@nitrrogen__ @Zassthelurker @chud14_3 No they were bigger. Ukrainian stayed mostly the same but Russian was brought back to an earlier state through language reforms, only without the obsolete letters

@Zassthelurker @nitrrogen__ @chud14_3 It was the Greek name for it, it meant "closer Russian" because they were closer to Constantinople than the muscovites but Russians turned it into a demeaning term

@Zassthelurker @nitrrogen__ @chud14_3 Ukrainian was also much more widespread than just Ukraine (which is why I speak it) and it's kind of impressive that there were half as many Ukrainian speakers than Russian speakers

@nitrrogen__ @DonKozack @chud14_3 The dialects were distinct enough to be listed on the Russian imperial census. From what I can tell they were listed as languages, although in fairness the formatting was a little weird.

@nitrrogen__ @chud14_3 There is no need for a war. Ukrainians before were willingly incorporated in the Russian empire because they had everything to win from it.

@nitrrogen__ @chud14_3 No the reason is because it was spoken by peasants and cossacks who were all day in their fort far far away from any other civilisation and didn't get influenced by language reforms or other languages. It's closer to polish because polish is a Slavic language too, simply

@nitrrogen__ @chud14_3 Ukrainian comes from old Russian and is significantly closer to it than actual Russian, which was heavily influenced by French due to it being the royal European language
I don't see why it matters that it wasn't classified as a language until 90 years ago

@nitrrogen__ @chud14_3 It wasn't the borderland? Kyiv was still the capital. And it means borderland in Serbian and Russian, but in old Russian/Ukrainian it means "our land", however if it stopped at that then calling them "Ukrainians" would make no sense.
