There were Slavic Duchies in Novgorod 200 years before Rurik came around. There were ancient writings found that were around 900 years before Rurik and 1000 years before cyrillic. Slavs had a sophisticated feudal state, similar to that of the Carolingians.

@nitrrogen__ Byzantine and Arab sources do mention a bunch of tribes/proto-states paying tributes to the Khazars, but we don't know a lot about the pre-rurik era.
