There were Slavic Duchies in Novgorod 200 years before Rurik came around. There were ancient writings found that were around 900 years before Rurik and 1000 years before cyrillic. Slavs had a sophisticated feudal state, similar to that of the Carolingians.

I'm tired of the Scandinavian/Norman origin theory of the Russian state. The ideas of Müller were already disproven in the 18th century by Lomonosov and other Russian historians. Müllers theories & the primary chronicles are unreliable, and served a political purpose, most of the supporters of these theories were German scholars with strong bias such as Schöltzer.
