@TheEternalKraut They wouldn't be more prosperous but it did not hold back the economy. Roughly the same trend is seen there with the "dip" post 1991 and then higher economic growth afterwards. @TheEternalKraut It's simply that the EU is more efficient than the USSR. But comes the question, would eastern europe BE in the EU to begin with without the fall of the USSR? Western Europe was very reluctant to let them in.

@nitrrogen__ Only in purchasing power and I doubt it. All of the former Eastern Bloc/Ex Soviets states underwent economic shock and it was particularly bad because the Balts decided to build themselves from the ground up instead of using existing Soviet institutions. The growth rate is larger
