@TheEternalKraut 1974 according to the charts the baltics were like 14-15,000 and western Europe was 19-20,000. Comparatively with how poor they were pre WW2 and with the rest of the USSR - economically it was a net+. The economic effects of extra welfare due to war veterans is negligible.

@nitrrogen__ Barely? And thats not evidence that they didn’t hold them back. The USSR also had plenty of more negative economic effects on the Baltics beyond economics like shipping war veterans to settle in Latvia that the state would later need to take care of for instance

@TheEternalKraut My argument is that independently. Without the USSR or the EU being a factor, the baltics would not be significantly richer, if not poorer.

@nitrrogen__ Thats a pretty big disparity especially considering how ruined France Britain Germany etc were by the war

You could make the argument that they would have been poorer without the USSR (kinda easy) but they would have been way better off in the hands of the West
